The 1x12,288 Linear Array Liquid Crystal Modulator is an appropriate
device for beam steering or printing applications.  The device uses standard Liquid Crystal (LC) on CMOS technology.  An array based on CMOS architecture offers access to cutting-edge high-resolution lithography, which translates to smaller pixel pitch and the potential for larger deflection angles for beam steering applications.  In addition, the CMOS on-chip electronics provide for ease of addressing, random access steering, and arbitrary wavefront control.  A further benefit to a CMOS-based array is the economy of scale that is inherent in semiconductor manufacturing. 

When filled with a Zero-Twist Nematic (ZTN) LC the device can be used as a fully programmable 1-dimensional diffractive beam steering array.  The non-mechanical beam deflection is achieved by loading the array with phase wedge patterns of varying pitches, in effect acting as a programmable diffractive phase grating.  The primary advantages of a Liquid Crystal beam steerer are the absence of mechanical motion (and as a consequence no pointing and stabilization problems), random access pointing, potential for large apertures, a lightweight optical head and the possibility of low cost, volume manufacturing.
